This course provides an in-depth look at CAD design and its critical importance in the development of a Formula 1 race car. You’ll have the opportunity to explore lesser-known aspects of the role, as well as the intricate design considerations for complex components. A unique feature of this course is the chance to receive industry-level guidance in designing a Bodywork surface using the CATIA CAD package.

Led by Martin Buchan, you will witness the design of a Formula 1 bodywork from scratch and explore different design variants aimed at achieving various aerodynamic goals.

Software used

The Aerodynamics Design in Formula 1 course involves the use of CATIA V5 developed by Dassault Systèmes. This software is used by motorsport organisations, including Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren.

Please note that the CATIA software license is not included in the cost of this course and will need to be purchased separately or provided by the student.

Martin Buchan
Martin Buchan
F1 Aerodynamics Design Engineer

Martin, with his background as an Aero Design Engineer in Formula 1, currently leads Buchan Motorsport, a company he founded to offer a variety of Motorsport products and services.

He holds a degree in Automotive Engineering from Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt in Bavaria. During his studies, Martin was selected for the prestigious Junior Engineer Programme at Audi AG, where he gained experience in various roles across multiple disciplines. After completing his degree, he continued at Audi as a Design Engineer.

In 2016, Martin moved to England to pursue an MSc in Advanced Motorsport Engineering at Cranfield University. His time there included working on a thesis in collaboration with McLaren Applied Technologies. Following his graduation, he secured a position with the Force India F1 team (now Aston Martin F1) as an Aerodynamic Design Engineer. In 2020, Martin took the entrepreneurial leap to establish Buchan Motorsport.
