What have others said
I would recommend this course to anyone willing to understand race car aerodynamics, especially those who participate in Formula Student. I would have really appreciated this course when I started in my team.
Really good course Adrian!
Iker Raigoso
Aerodynamicist at Aston Martin F1 Team (former student of Introduction to Race Car Aerodynamics)
I was initially a bit concerned about getting an “introduction” course as I already had a lot of prior FSAE experience going into it, but the course breadth was quite helpful in filling in gaps. I have zero wind tunnel experience, but this course was able to provide me with a good foundation to have conversations about wind tunnel testing during interviews.
David Penner
Introduction to Race Car Aerodynamics Student
I have enjoyed this course very much. It is a unique way of learning since it is the only course I have found where you learn from an actual trackside aerodynamicist, who knows by first hand all the work involved in this subject. I have especially liked the instrumentation and aero data analysis modules, which were very well explained with practical examples, as well as all the practical assessments where I could apply the knowledge acquired. I would have appreciated a bit more of explanation about how vortices are treated in these cars and ways to assess their impact in the aerodynamics of the car using CFD post processing tools.
Jaume Cruces
Trackside Aerodynamics Student
Brilliant course which covers all aspects of being a Trackside aero engineer as well as in-deep aerodynamic F1 concepts. It is recommended to have some aero background to follow properly the course. I especially enjoyed the hands-on and challenging assignments and surprised by the fast feedback from Xavier. Not every day you get feedback from an F1 Aerodynamicist!
Thank you Xavier!
Gerard Sabaté Arroyo
Trackside Aerodynamics Student
The whole course contains a lot of content which cannot be found elsewhere. The fact that is is led by someone with experinece from different F1 teams guarantee unique, specifically oriented insight into 2 major topics of todays F1 aero development: wind tunnel testing and CFD. The introductory part gives a good overview and put the whole content into context. Following detailed sections explains essential topics, present approaches and currently used methods. Recommend to every engineer who is interested into race car aerodynamics in any way.

Adrian Villar

Xavier Ballesta
Adrian studied Mechanical Engineering at Universidad Simón Bolívar in Venezuela, where he was an active member of the Formula SAE team. He later completed his thesis at Volkswagen AG in Germany before moving to the UK to earn an MSc at Oxford Brookes University. Adrian worked in Formula 1 with Caterham F1 and Manor F1 as an Aerodynamics Engineer, gaining experience in aerodynamic development, CFD methodology and experimental testing. He then moved into the automotive sector, leading aerodynamic CFD activities at Jaguar Land Rover and Dyson Automotive. In 2020, he founded VFluid Technology, a consultancy focused on fluid dynamics, product development and technical training. He is currently Chief Technical Officer at Deflect LLC.
Xavier is currently an Aerodynamics Project Leader at Williams Racing, where he leads the development of aerodynamic components through CFD, wind tunnel and track testing programmes. He holds a Bachelor in Aeronautical Engineering and a Master’s in Aerospace Engineering from UPC Barcelona Tech. Xavier began his career at Seat Sport working on the aerodynamics of the WTCC Seat Leon, before joining IDIADA as a CFD engineer, contributing to multiple automotive aerodynamics projects over four years. In 2012, he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue a career in Formula 1, joining Marussia F1 Team as an aerodynamicist, and later transitioning to Williams in 2014.
